Facebook Groups: The Privacy Invasion

According to research conducted by Nielsen, 23% of online time is taken up by social networking, which is up 43% from last year. An astounding 85% of online time is spent on Facebook.  Facebook outweighs email and gaming, and has become more and more prevalent throughout the online world.

The new fad on Facebook is creating or becoming a part of a Group. Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook CEO) stated in the announcement that groups are going to create a fundamental shift in how people use Facebook.  Groups have been designed for individuals to limit the communication between some of your Facebook friends and yourself.

There are a few different types of Groups that you can create and or join:

Public: groups where both the membership list and the contents of the group is accessible to anyone.

Closed: groups where the contents are private but the membership list is public so it’s possible to search for closed groups and know who is in them.

Secret: groups where the member list, the contents, and the existence of the group are secrets to anyone other than the people in the group.

With the three Group setup options you can decide based upon the information being shared in a Group, which setting you think is most appropriate.  However, while you think that a Group can be closed and or secret, beware that the privacy of your group can become more accessible then you think.

Once you are accepted into a Closed or Secret group any member of the group has access to invite or grant access to others, without consent of other members.  Groups can quickly get out of hand if they are not managed well.

Are you in a Group?

Facebook is all the fad…but now I think we are all starting to believe that Facebook is the exact opposite of a fad and is, indeed a social networking tool that will be here to stay (at least for a while).  With the internet growing at a rapid pace, Facebook is right there growing as well.  Facebook added a new feature last week that may seem well overdue.  Now Facebookers can create small private groups of friends, where you can communicate and share pictures without everyone in your social network seeing.

The new group function gives every member of Facebook a chance to be exclusive with their chats, and their pictures, as well as their friends.  You can create a group of any of your friends.  You can communicate, post pictures, and share problems or thoughts through these chats with the confidence that what you say or do in these chats will not be public to the Facebook world.

Groups may also be used as a good business tool.  You can create a group for social media gurus, and the space is a place for people to share new ideas, trends, and etc…  So if you have a bright idea and want to expand on the topic form a Group and start the conversation.

Are you Linked IN?

The social networking craze has been overloading the public with pictures, games, fun facts about yourself and your friends, however many are looking for a social network that isn’t all fun and games.  LinkedIn, a social network for business  professionals  is also perceived as a long distance cousin to Facebook.  LinkedIn is a social network and a place where you can post your resume and find jobs online, while interacting with others on the site.  Many rely on Facebook for social networking connections, but many are now relying on LinkedIn to help with things a little more business oriented.

Many companies use Facebook and Twitter to help network their businesses.  It is definitely not easy for LinkedIn living in the shadow of these two popular networking sites.  With 500 million users connecting with friends, trading photos, videos and articles, or wasting hours of their time playing social networking games, Facebook has taken control of the social networking world.  It has built a monopoly on the internet social sites.  Twitter is right behind Facebook, and has built up a solid niche for those interested in broadcasting their thoughts 24/7.

LinkedIn, has started to create a name for itself on the world wide web, and more and more has started to see its presence online.  LinkedIn is targeted towards anyone with a career, business ambitions, or someone who wants to climb to the top of their corporate ladder.  LinkedIn is there to help those people.  LinkedIn has 75 million users, and for the most part those users are people who want to find jobs or recruit others online.

So, when you decide to login to Facebook or Twitter and connect with others about what they ate for breakfast, or what kind of dog they are thinking about adopting, think about LinkedIn and how it can help you build your social business network and connections.

The question now isn’t “Are you on Facebook”?  The question has turned to, “Are you on LinkedIn”?

So join the movement, become LinkedIn.

Google vs. Facebook

Google versus Facebook is the fight between search and social, both of which people use on a daily basis.  Facebook boasts 500 million users and rules the social sector, while Google dominates pretty much every other sector. Facebook in August for the first time took the top spot among major sites with a total of 41.1 billion minutes, according to new data from comScore. Google was second with 39.8 billion minutes spent on the various sites of Google, including Google News and YouTube. No wonder it’s been said that users don’t visit Facebook, they live there.

Waging the battle to win your time and attention, both companies are currently engaged in major undertakings  Facebook, already having 150 million mobile users, is working on a mobile platform that would be giant leap from its current phone app into a sophisticated, “socially-informed” mobile experience. To that end they hired away Google’s Senior Product Manager of Android, Erick Tseng.

For its part, Google is looking for ways to challenge Facebook. An early attempt to build a social network upon its base of 200 million Gmail users, fell flat largely due to limited features. Now with the acquisition of several companies with a wealth of talented engineers, speculation is running high that Google is developing a destination for social games and applications that will act as the seed ground for the growth of its own social network, likely to be called Google Me.

Google versus Facebook.  Drawing the battle lines – who will win?

Do you Digg?

Social networking websites keep popping up throughout the digital world, and sometimes you cannot seem to keep track of every site out there.  DIGG is another social networking site that many avid internet users choose to use to share links, interests, and is based highly on a ranking system.  Digg is a place where a social networker can “digg” or “like” anything essentially on the web.

When you decide to Digg something on the web it is usually something that is of interest to you.  You can then connect with the person who posted the link, created the link, after you have dugg something of interest.  Digg is becoming more and more popular amongst people with similar interests, as well as people who share their social networking thoughts.

To really become an avid social networker, you should be on as many sites as possible to experience the different capabilities of each site.  However, be careful you aren’t spreading yourself too thin.

Protecting Your Pay Per Click Budget

It’s fun to see your ad in search results – your friends and family probably want to know what you’re doing, too.  But what do you do when they keep clicking on your ad and using up your budget for the day?  Meet the ad preview tool: it simulates the live environment but doesn’t allow clicks.

The tool provides you with protection in some big ways:

  • Protects your quality score:
    • If someone views your ad repeatedly but doesn’t click on it, Google will decide this ad is less relevant to the search and that can affect your quality score.
  • Protects your budget:
    • A lower quality score means you will have to spend more money to maintain the same position.
  • Allows you to monitor your own ads:
    • If you, the company owner, go out and search for your store all the time but never click on your ad, Google will “learn” that your ad is not what you are looking for and stop showing it to you.

Start using the preview tool today.  Search for “red shoes” in New York, or “movie theatres” in Los Angeles.  It’s a great way to monitor the competition too!
